Since the ancient times of this world till today, building water wells has been seen as a great humanitarian work. We know the story of Ismail As and the well of Zamzam, which is considered the most pure, holy, and heavenly water. Ibrahim AS, Hajar AS, and Ismail AS sacrificed to fulfill the command of Allah, and Allah SWT blessed them with the well of Zamzam, which was among the primary reason the most prosperous city of this earth since that day, Makkatul Mukarramah, to be built. Since then Allah SWT made the whole world come to Makkatul Makarramah. A heavenly water well was the source of that city being built.
Since ancient times, water wells were considered very important because the water has been said to be “life.” When a water well is built, it brings life to that entire locality. Because the water is needed for cooking, drinking, washing, and purifying and so many other thing in life.
On the other hand, when Islamic commandments came, the importance of water became even greater. Why? Because the basic requirement of prayer to get accepted is Taharah, and for basic or intense Taharah, one needs water. Which means by building a water well, a person is helping a locality not only to survive but also to make their Akhirah beautiful at the same time. Therefore, building a water well has been said as Sadaqah Jariyah by the honorable Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam).
And in a Hadith Qudsi we find that, Allah SWT will call on the day of judgment thus,
يا ابن آدم استسقيتك فلم تسقني! قال: يارب كيف أسقيك وأنت رب العالمين؟! قال: استسقاك عبدي فلان فلم تسقه! أما علمت أنك لو سقيته لوجدت ذلك عندي؟” ((رواه مسلم)).
O son of Adam, I asked water from you but you did not give it to Me. The person would say: “My Rubb, how could I give You (water) and You are the Rubb of the worlds?’ Thereupon Allah SWT would say: ‘Such and such a slave of Mine asked you for water to drink but you did not give it to him. Did you not realize that if you had given him to drink you would have found (its reward) with Me?”‘ (Muslim)
In an another Hadith we find,
.عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ (رضي الله عنه)، قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَىُّ الصَّدَقَةِ أَفْضَلُ قَالَ “ سَقْىُ الْمَاءِ
Saad bin Ubada (Rd) “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what charity is best?’ He said: ‘Giving water to drink.’” (Sunan Ibn Majah 3684)
Therefore, Let’s build a water well to a needed place. Including many countries in Africa and South Asia many places of this earth are need of pure water. Be one of them who built a water well in this earth to ensure pure water for mankind. May Allah help you. Ameen.
